Common MAMP Problems. Apache Server Not Starting. For the past 24 hours I have been depressed because I could not connect to mySQL server via MAMP and so my WordPress theme development was cut short. Imagine the time and money lost if I was doing this for a client!? Patrick, you have a new friend and follower. Jan 2, 2013 - There are several reasons why your MySQL may not be starting. Let´s fix that with these simple solutions.
The MAMP MySQL servers can be a tricky thing…
I use a mixture of Local by Flywheel and MAMP for my local development work. Sometimes, I have issues when launching MAMP with the MySQL servers not starting. The spinner goes round and round until I get a note offering me the log files to check. Getting the MAMP MySQL servers to play nicely again is actually not so difficult.
This is a very quick tip, that was published a long time ago (March 2006) here: http://twob.net/journal/fix-for-mamp-mysql/ I am reproducing it purely to make it easier for me to find!
- Quit MAMP
- Open the Terminal and type:
killall -9 mysqld
- Restart MAMP
If you are not able to type the command into Terminal, try adding
sudo
before this. For more MAMP tips, see this page: MAMP archive. If you are new to MAMP and want to get WordPress installed on your Mac, I have a quick MAMP video walkthrough here.

I am using MAMP 4.1 on Windows 10 and cannot get MySQL server to start. When I uninstalled MAMP and re-installed it MySQL server starts up, but when I stop it, it will not start back up. I also went into the mampdbmysql and deleted the four log files. Then I turned the server off, then back on, but only Apache starts up, not MySQL.
There is also a process running in services called MySQL80. When I try to start it I get the error 'File Not Found'. I have tried many ways to delete it, including going to the command prompt and using 'sc mysql80' and going to 'regedit'. MySQL80 does not show up anywhere so that I can delete it.
Also, the Resource Monitor shows that Apache is running on port 80, but nothing on port 3306. And yes, my MAMP Preferences are set to port 3306 for MySQL.
When MySQL was running, I had 2 processes of 'mysqld' listening: one session on IPv6 Port 3306, and the other session on IPv4 Port 3306.
What's wrong and how do I fix it?
And, is there suppose to be (2) sessions of 'mysqld' both listening on port 3306 where one is on IPv6 and the other is on IPv4?
Thanks Community.
